Enrichment Students

As defined by the regulations readopted on June 1, 2005 by the State Board of Education, gifted and talented students are:

“Those students who possess or demonstrate high levels of ability, in one or more content areas, when compared to their chronological peers in the local district and who require modification of their educational program if they are to achieve in accordance with their capabilities."

Enrichment Program Description

“Gifted and Talented” means students who possess or demonstrate high levels of ability in one or more content areas, when compared to their chronological peers in the district and who require modifications of their educational program if they are to achieve in accordance with their capabilities.

The Colts Neck Township School District will develop procedures for ongoing Kindergarten through grade eight identification processes for gifted and talented students that include multiple measures. Multiple measures may include, but are not limited to: achievement test scores; grades; student performance or products; intelligence testing; parent, student, and/or teacher recommendation; and other appropriate measures. The identification methodology will be developmentally appropriate, non-discriminatory, and related to the programs and services offered by the district. The identification procedures will be reviewed annually.

Enrichment Opportunities for K -5

The students at Colts Neck Township School District at Conover Road Primary School and Conover Road Elementary School in grades 1-5 participate in enrichment activities and lessons that are scheduled by grade level and subject area. The activities provide students with opportunities that enrich curriculum areas in ELA, Math, Technology, STEM, and the Arts. All students in Kindergarten are provided enrichment opportunities beginning in the winter to provide advanced math concepts.

In the elementary grades students who are identified as exceeding grade level expectations and demonstrating strengths in various levels of ELA and Math are invited into the enrichment program in the early fall. Students are then re-evaluated in the winter for the enrichment program.  Students in the program are provided with opportunities to challenge their thinking, explore their interests, interact with the world at large and grow socially and emotionally.

Enrichment Opportunities for 6-8

The students at Colts Neck Township School District at Cedar Drive Middle School in grades 6-8 are clustered together in various academic content areas. Students identified for ELA Enrichment will be enriched through reading and writing instruction in the summer prior to that school year. Specifically in grade 6 in Greek Mythology, in grade 7 in Edgar Allan Poe, and in grade 8 in Shakespeare.  Students will be placed in accelerated or advanced math classes based on multiple measures of math performance. Students who demonstrate advanced skills and talents in music and art are given opportunities to participate in advanced classes.
