• Off and Running

Posted by Fredrik Oberkehr on 10/1/2013 1:00:00 PM

On September 23, 2013, we conducted our Action Team "Kick Off" with interested constituents of the school community.  Dr. Ferguson lead a conversation surrounding the purpose of each Action Teams to create Results Oriented Action Plans to address each of the seven strategies developed by the Strategic Planning Steering Committee.  Over the course of the next several months, Action Teams will work on developing plans which will be reviewed periodically by the Steering Committee.  It is anticipated that the Strategic Plan, including Strategy Plans, will be complete by January.  If you may still be interested in participating on an Action Team, please refer to the overview page of this website for contact information.  I want to thank all for their time and effort in this most important endeavor.

On June 19, 2013, the Board of Education approved the Vision, Mission, Goals, Strategies, Core Values, and Commitments for the development of our Strategic Plan.  In July, Our intention is to solicit volunteers from the school community to work on the Action Teams that will address the Strategies as outlined.  Action Team Leaders will then be trained early in September and begin work to complete the Strategic Plan.  If all goes well, the Board of Education will consider approving the plan at one of their December meetings.

    COLTS NECK TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT

    2013-2018 STRATEGIC PLAN

    Strategic Plan Components

    DEFINITIONS:

Vision is the picture of the future we seek to create.  It answers the question “What do we want to become?”  By clarifying the general direction for change it simplifies decisions, motivates people to take action, coordinates that action and clears the decks of expensive and time-consuming clutter.

The Mission is the school district’s raison d’être.  It answers the questions: Why do we exist?  What is our purpose and who are we most concerned about serving?

Strategic Goals are specific, measurable end results tied closely to the Mission. Few in number, and student centered, their measurement informs the district regarding its progress toward its Mission.  They are expressed in the ideal state, e.g. All students or 100 % of students

Strategies are the pathways toward accomplishing the Mission.  They indicate the critical areas in which the district must invest its time, money and effort in order to reach the Mission. They are tied to the Mission rather than any single Goal, although collectively they ensure that the Goals will also be accomplished.

Note:   Each strategy will be addressed by an Action Team that will research, plan and produce Action Plans for implementation over a five year period.  With the proposed seven strategies, there will be seven Action Teams formed to produce these plans.

Core Values answer the question, “How do we want (need) to act, consistent with our mission, along the path toward achieving our district’s vision?”

Commitments are promises that the school district makes in order to stay focused on its Mission.

  • Strategic Planning Update

Posted by Fredrik Oberkehr on 4/26/2013 12:00:00 PM

Recently, we had our "kick off" for strategic planning with the goal of developing a plan for the next five years.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who participated in this most important endeavor.  Although we did run a bit short on time over the course of the two days, I believe, in essence, we established criteria for a draft Mission and Vision that will drive instructional practice, operations, and the overall management of the district.  Over the past several days, I have received additional input from the Steering Committee, and we are working to incorporate those suggestions/comments into the draft.  Moving forward, once the committee, for all intents and purposes, has approved the draft, we will share out with the greater school community during the month of May.  Once we have received input from all constituencies, I will recommend for the Board of Education to consider approving the Mission and Vision at one of the regularly scheduled meetings in June.  Again, thank you to the Steering Committee members for their efforts, input and patience throughout this process.

  • And We're Off

Posted by Fredrik Oberkehr on 4/11/2013 9:00:00 AM
Over the past two days, the Strategic Planning Steering Committee met in consultation with Dr. Ferguson of Centennium Consultants to begin working on our Strategic plan 2013-2018.  These two days were extremely productive and I want to thank the approximately 27 parents, board members, administrators, and teachers who participated in these sessions.  We were able to draft a Mission and Vision that will carry the district forward for years to come.  We also worked on key strategies that will drive our Action Teams that will detail the work we will do over the next five years.  We still have some finer points to discuss such as student goals, common values and commitments, but I can share an approximate timeline so that you may keep abreast of our expectations and progress:
    • Board approval of our Mission and Vision statements as well as the goals and strategies in June 2013
    • Establish Action Teams during the Summer and early September 2013
    • Final adoption of the Strategic Plan in December 2013

Finally, one overarching theme that I believe was consistent in our conversations is that we all agree Colts Neck Township is an outstanding school district that does face many challenges in the near and long term future.  However, we are committed to ensuring that we not only continue to perform well, but we also develop a plan for the betterment of all that we do for the students of Colts Neck Township.

  • Strategic Planning "Kick Off"

Posted by Fredrik Oberkehr on 4/3/2013 8:40:00 AM

On April 9th and 10th, we will "kick off" the Strategic Plan development process.  Dr. Judith Ferguson of Centennium Consultants, LLC will lead this endeavor to begin asking the questions of "Why we exist?" and "What is our purpose and who are we most concerned about serving?".  We will look at our perceived strengths and weaknesses and conduct an organizational critique of the district.  We will examine economic, social/demographic, political and technological and educational trends and influences.  We will discuss "core values" to define "How do we want/need to act in ways that are consistent with the mission of the district.  We are looking forward to this first session and the work of the action teams over the coming months in developing our Strategic Plan 2013-2018.
